A Sweetener To Avoid

An Artificial Sweetener To Avoid

Believe it or not, the average American consumes a whopping 125 pounds of sweeteners per year! That number is staggering and alarming when you think of all the health risks associated with many artificial sweeteners and even some natural sweeteners out on the market and in many of the products we consume day to day.

Take Sorbitol for example. Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol that is often used to sweeten processed foods and many over the counter pharmacy products. Sorbitol is known for causing premature cataracts, retinopathy, heavy weight loss and peripheral neuropathy. What’s disheartening is that Sorbitol is purchased by many without them even realizing that it is one of the main ingredients in a food or product.

How could we avoid purchasing products that include Sorbitol? Make sure to check your ingredient labels! And here’s a little tip… If it’s one of the first few ingredients listed, that means it’s one of the MAIN ingredients included and that the majority of the product is made up of that ingredient. So if Sorbitol is at the top of that ingredient list, it’s best to steer clear!

Are there any other natural sweeteners that I should opt for instead?

Absolutely! Natural sweeteners like Stevia and Honey are really great alternatives to use when a little sweetness is needed. Organic Honey, in fact, is one of 7 all-natural ingredients included in Gargle Away’s® advanced formula. Paired perfectly with the other ingredients, the honey is used as a natural coat for your sore throat and also adds a hint of sweetness at the end.

Some other natural sweeteners to consider: Yacon, Coconut Sugar, Xylitol and Erythritol.

Stick with these natural options and you’ll wonder why you were ever consuming artificial sweeteners in the first place!
