Winter chill in officially in the air! The winter months can be a hectic time, especially because of the the unpredictable weather and the spread of illness. With the end of holiday season, the regret of overeating and indulging sets in, cold weather makes it difficult to exercise, and flu season makes the spread of sickness rampant! Here are some tips to overcome these obstacles and keep healthy during the chilly winter months.
New Year, New Diet
During the winter holidays, it can be especially grueling to maintain a healthy diet and keep your calorie intake at a low level. Many people simply choose to forget about their health goals until New Years Day, when they resolve to start anew with their health and weight loss plans.
Contrary to popular belief, though, it is possible to meet your body’s nutritional needs without depriving yourself. First of all, watch portion sizes. One of the biggest reasons people overeat is because they don’t pay enough attention to what and how much they’re eating. Be sure to avoid casual “grazing,” and make it a rule to only eat when sitting down. Getting adequate sleep and making it a point to not skip meals will also help you avoid overeating.
Last but not least, pay attention to the nutritional content of the food you are consuming. A diet rich in winter treats may be poor in essential vitamins and minerals, for example — so a daily multivitamin, a veggie-based snack, or even a soothing herbal tea are all good ideas. Some teas we especially love:
The cold weather makes it tricky to find a place to work out, and a great deal of people don’t have the time or money to drive to the gym and back during the day. There are some easy yet effective exercises that you can do in the comfort of your own home. Take a few minutes each day to stretch, jog in place, or do jumping jacks to burn calories and keep your heart rate up! We also LOVE these fun fitness apps that help with daily workouts:
If you do decide to exercise outside, wear layers so that you can remove them as your body warms up, or put them back on as you cool down. (And don’t forget that a warm bubble bath upon arriving home can be the perfect motivator to get you out and about on those blustery January days!)
We’ve all experienced the discomfort of wintertime illness — and while you should take the necessary precautions to avoid illness all together, sometimes getting sick is just inevitable. So, to manage your illness, be sure to get plenty of sleep, stay hydrated, opt for foods high in vitamin C, such as oranges, strawberries and broccoli and most important wash your hands regularly so you don’t easily pick up germs from your environment.
